Sidewinder

Aerial photography on Sidewinder at Sparrow Hill, Kowen Forest, Canberra, for A Sparrow Flies on sparrowhill.info.

A sparrow’s view from the aerial video A Sparrow Flies shows the new Sidewinder as a peloton negotiates a rock garden with a few optional technical routes up, before tackling the climb up the gentle slopes of the actual Sparrow Hill, in the background.

You don’t have to take to the air like our photographer to find the new Sidewinder. It starts near the top gate, just down the fire-road 100m or so from the start of Blue Lagoon, and runs through that big open area that used to contain Ingledene, followed by The Sweeper and the old Sidewinder, before Forestry clear-felled the whole area. That killed off all three of those tracks.

It led to construction of The Trig a couple of years ago to re-establish the loop with Traffic Jam and Choc Monte.

Now, the new Sidewinder goes the whole way to Traffic Jam, 2km away. It’s a bit more challenging than most of Sparrow, with quite a lot of climbing. But just think about riding it the other way! Check our maps and look at the new opportunities to ride different loops. And watch for the Sidewinder flag on that first horizon!

The new Sidewinder runs from the top gate and joins Traffic Jam on the farthest hill.
